Ambassadors from three European countries visited the Kutupalong Rohingya Refugee Camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Ambassadors Johan Frisell (Sweden), Mikael H. Winther (Denmark) and Sidsel Bleken (Norway) reached camp at around 10:30 am, where they met with government officials and representatives from different humanitarian organisations at the camp’s conference hall. Camp-in-Charge Shamsud Douja gave them a short briefing on the overall situation of the camp. After the meeting, the ambassadors spent time walking around the camp to observe the condition of newly arrived refugees and listen to their heartbreaking stories of the atrocities in Myanmar. The refugees in camp got to speak closely with the ambassadors and expressed the feelings of persecution that they had experienced in Myanmar. They asked the ambassadors to step in and play a signifcant role in finding a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis.
The delegations assured the Rohingya in the camp that they have always been committed to helping refugees. They said that they have been carefully noting the human rights violations against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar.
To escape the violence and abuse, the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar have had to flee the country. Since October 2016, more than 65,000 have fled to Bangladesh as a result of persecution in Myanmar. This is in addition to the 300,000-500,000 Rohingyas already living in Bangladesh.
