At least 11 families in Firing Dong, Rathedaung were threatened with dire consequences and forced to pay 550,000 kyats on allegations their family members based in foreign countries were conspiring against the country. It was also alleged the migrants were lobbying with the governments of those countries to provide support for terrorists.
The allegations and extortions were made on Monday by village authorities and police.
All the affected families have people living in the Gulf countries or Malaysia.
Our correspondent in the area says this is an excuse to extort money from Rohingyas who are better off than the others.
