Six people have been arrested from Sitar Pawrika in Maungdaw South after the military accused them of being part of a Bangladesh based dacoit gang.
On Tuesday morning, the six farmers were working on the field when a military team spotted them. The men did not run away as the military were aiming their guns at them, report local sources.
The military men came to the them and accused them of being part of the notorious Abdul Hakim dacoit team that preys on Rohingya civilians in the Maungdaw border region. Sources allege the gang is in cohorts with influential Bangladeshi politicians on the Teknaf side of the border.
Relatives and locals fear the arrested men will face brutal torture in custody. Since the military crackdown started on October 9, scores of civilians have been arrested by the military and subjected to brutal torture. Many have been confirmed dead following torture.
Brutal torture of Muslim prisoners is common in Arakan where hundreds have been killed and maimed in custody.
