Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar – A group of 36 Rohingya refugees, including men, women, and children, were detained by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Sunday after arriving in Teknaf by sea. The group crossed the Bay of Bengal in a fishing boat and entered the Marine Drive area through Mundar Dail Ghat in Sabrang.
The group comprises 21 men, 5 women, and 10 children, according to BGB officials, who stated that they intend to send the refugees back to Myanmar.
Md Selim, a local Union Parishad member, confirmed the arrival. “A trawler carrying 36 Rohingya arrived at Munder Deilghat. They are now under BGB custody. We have also received reports about another boat carrying Rohingya near Baharchhara,” he said.
Md Alam, a 30-year-old member of the group, described the dire conditions they fled. “We are from Nashang, east of Akyab. The Mog Baghi and Arakan Army are torturing Rohingya in our area. We fled to save our lives. Our boat engine broke down after four days at sea, but another trawler helped us reach the shore, where we were handed over to the BGB,” he recounted.
Another refugee, Zaher Alam, highlighted the oppressive situation in their villages. “There are five Muslim villages where people are being forced to take weapons training and fight against the junta. Those who refuse are tortured. The Arakan Army is using us as tools. We thought it was better to die in Bangladesh than stay and suffer in Myanmar,” he explained.
