Media reports indicate that three boats carrying approximately 500 Rohingya people were allowed to disembark in Indonesia’s Aceh Province. Among the 500 or so Rohingyas it is reported that this also included the boat that was sent back out to sea on Thursday, which carried around 250 people.
The UNHCR had pleaded with authorities in Indonesia to allow the boats to dock given the difficulties the refugees face at sea. Observers stated to RFA media outlets that the Rohingya who arrived were “unstable” and looked “famished, sick and exhausted.”
Since last week the total of Rohingya people who have now arrived in Indonesia is close to 1,000. Deteriorating security conditions in the refugee camps in Bangladesh and the conditions in the Arakan have made it unbearable for the Rohingya, which continue to resort to risking their lives at sea.
