Reports have emerged that the Arakan Army (AA) is coercing Rohingya youths in Maungdaw Township to join their ranks, heightening fears among local communities in the already volatile region of Arakan State.
On August 5th, a truck carrying approximately 37 members of the AA entered Kyaw Hle Kha village, a predominantly Rohingya area, and gathered residents from nearby villages, including Zin Paing Yar and Minglalar Gyi. During a meeting held with these communities, the AA reportedly issued a chilling ultimatum: each village must provide 30 youths to join the Arakan Army if they wish to continue living in the AA-controlled territories.
In total, 90 Rohingya youths from Zin Paing Yar, Minglalar Gyi, and Kyaw Hle Kha villages are expected to be forcibly recruited by the end of the month, according to residents. These youths are set to undergo militia training under the Arakan Army’s supervision, with threats of family detentions looming over those who refuse to comply.
Adding to the tension, the AA reportedly stated during the meeting that residents of Kyi Kan Pyin village would be forcibly relocated to the three villages—Kyaw Hle Kha, Zin Paing Yar, and Minglalar Gyi—where they would be housed alongside the existing population. The residents are now gripped by fear of the AA’s forceful recruitment practices, fearing that their children may be used as human shields in clashes with the Myanmar military.
As the situation unfolds, the Rohingya communities in Maungdaw Township are left to grapple with the growing threat of forced conscription, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
