A Rohingya fisherman was killed, and six others remain missing after the Arakan Army (AA), a Rakhine rebel group, opened fire on them while they were fishing in the Naf River on the night of March 7.
According to reports, around 8:00 PM, AA’s coastal guard units shot at a group of seven Rohingya fishermen near Nga Sa Kyu and Ludaing villages in northern Maungdaw.
While one fisherman was fatally shot, the other six managed to flee. However, their current condition and whereabouts remain unknown.
Local sources revealed that the fishermen, who were residents of Nga Sa Kyu village, had earlier negotiated with the Arakan Army in Ludaing village to obtain permission to fish in the Naf River.
They allegedly paid a ransom for this permission, yet despite the agreement, AA forces opened fire, leading to the death of one and the disappearance of the others.
A relative of one of the missing fishermen shared his concerns:
“They had already negotiated with the Arakan Army and paid a ransom to fish in the Naf River. However, despite this, AA members attacked them while they were fishing near Nga Sa Kyu and Ludaing villages. One was shot dead, and the other six have not been seen since the incident.”
The attack has heightened fear among Rohingya communities in Maungdaw and surrounding areas, who continue to face violence, extortion, and persecution at the hands of armed groups.
Local residents are now calling for international attention to address the growing threats faced by the Rohingya population in conflict-affected regions.
