Rohingyas left inside the country following the 2017 military led operations have to pay an increasing rate of money as bribes to collaborators working with the government.
Sources in Tet Min Chaung under Buthidaung say their chairman (Hukkata) does not provide birth certificate under 20,000 kyats although the previous ones were only 1000 kyats (legally they are free). Similarly higher rates are being called for every service. Any Rohingya even the new born children risk being branded as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and so birth certificates are vital for survival.
Meanwhile instances of blackmailing are also on the rise and Rohingyas without birth certificate for their children are being threatened till they pay a huge amount of money. In many instances, Rohingyas are being forces to sell their personal belongings to get birth certificates.
In times, ordinary Rohingya are being forced by security forces to act as collaborators and officials, and must meet the demands of officials at any cost. The security forces take the lion’s share of the money that ordinary Rohingyas pay to the collaborators.
