Speaker: Liam MAHONY | Independent consultant and expert on humanitarian protection and human rights.
Liam Mahony is an independent consultant and an expert on humanitarian protection and human rights with over 35 years’ experience in fieldwork, research/writing and training all over the world. He taught at Princeton University and is author of several books on protection, including “Proactive Presence: Field Strategies for Civilian Protection” (Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue, 2006). He has designed protection trainings and human rights monitoring training for multiple UN agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Through internal strategy consultancies beginning in 2015, Mr. Mahony began urging the United Nations and the overall humanitarian system in Myanmar of their complicit role in tacitly supporting the steadily-developing genocide of the Rohingya people. As these internal warnings went unheeded, Mr. Mahony independently published in June 2018 the essay, “Time to Break Old Habits: Shifting from Complicity to Protection of the Rohingya in Myanmar,” and has since done follow-up consulting with international NGOs both in Myanmar and Bangladesh, as well as with diplomatic and donor institutions.
