The international conference Challenges and Prospects for Upholding Minority and Indigenous Rights will be held in Stirling, Scotland, from March 5-7, 2025. The event aims to explore the progress, challenges, and future direction of international legal instruments designed to protect the rights of minority and indigenous communities.
Since the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, landmark treaties such as the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights have laid the foundation for protecting these communities. However, as new threats and opportunities emerge, there is a growing need to rethink and strengthen these protections.
The two-and-a-half-day in-person conference will provide a platform for academics, practitioners, and community members to engage in inclusive discussions. The event will examine critical issues like self-determination, land rights, economic and civil rights, governance, data sovereignty, and the impact of artificial intelligence and technology on indigenous populations.
Participants are invited to submit abstracts by November 1, 2024. Accepted papers will have the opportunity for publication in an edited volume or journal.
