A commuter was brutally assaulted by La Wa Ka in a checkpoint near Swe Zerr in Southern Maungdaw on Friday.
Md Zubair was returning from Maungdaw town as a passenger on a motorbike when he was stopped at the La Wa Ka checkpoint set up on the premises of a school. When La Wa Ka asked Zubair if he had registered for the NVC, he replied that he had not as Rohingyas were not foreigners and NVC is only required for those who are not natives of the country.
Hearing this, the La Wa Ka proceeded to brutally assault him till he fell unconscious. Since then Zubair has remained without any medical treatment, as it is completely absent from Rohingya neighbourhoods.
Incidentally, the controversial NVC scheme registers the Rohingyas as Bengalis. Much of Myanmar regards the Rohingyas as migrants from Bangladesh. Despite brutal military operations, the Rohingyas have been steadfast in insisting that they don’t need the NVC as it is only for migrants, and the Rohingyas are indigenous to the soil of Arakan. Refusal to accept the NVC as Bengalis have drawn further irk from the authorities.
