On June 25, the Rohingya political party, Democracy and Human Right Party (DHRP) based in Yangon asked the Union Election Commission to participate in the upcoming 2020 general election.
The Rohingyas had the right to vote and to stand as a candidate at elections and be a parliament member since Pre-Myanmar independence till 2010 Myanmar general election. However, prior to the 2015 general election, the Myanmar parliament introduced a new law regarding the holder of the temporarily registered card (TRC) which was designed to disenfranchise the Rohingyas from the “Right to Vote”.
On June 20 of 2019, DHRP appealed to the Union Election Commission (UEC) to consider the right of voting of the Rohingyas in Rakhine (Arakan) state, but till the date of their press release, there was no response from UEC.
U Kyaw Min is the chairman of the Democracy and Human Right Party.
