On Tuesday, Facebook has denied the request of Gambia to provide posts and communications by members of Myanmar’s military and police. according to Reuters’ reporting, the social media urged the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to reject the demand, which it said would violate a U.S. law that bars electronic communication services from disclosing users communications.
Earlier in June, Gambia requested Facebook to provide evidence against Myanmar at the World Court of having genocidal intent in 2017, making almost 730,000 Rohingya flee from their homeland. Ever since they have been living in the Southeastern region of Bangladesh as refugees.
In 2018, U.N. human rights investigators said Facebook had played a key role in spreading hate speech that had fuelled the violence. Facebook has said it is working to block hate speech. But on Thursday, a spokesperson said Facebook “stands against hate and violence, including in Myanmar” which seemingly appears there was a transgression.
