Hlun Htein personal attempted to rape a woman near Mamadia village in Mamra and grievously assaulted the victim’s husband and son when they resisted the sexual attack.
At around 11am on Saturday, Ayesha Khatun, along with her husband Abdus Shukkur and son Md Sharif went out of their village. Ayesha was working in the vegetable field while her husband and son went fishing to the nearby river.
Soon, a Hlun Htein patrol team came to the spot and finding Ayesha alone, forced themselves on her. Hearing her cries for help, her husband and son came running to the scene and tried to stop the attack.
In response, the security personal assaulted them mercilessly leaving them bleeding on the ground. The commotion however alerted Rohingya villagers from Mamadia who came rushing to the scene.
The Hlun Htein told the villagers the woman was engaged in illegal activities and they were taking her to the village headman when the two family members obstructed their duties. When asked what the woman had done, they replied they were not bound to inform the villagers and asked them to go to the headman.
However, the Hlun Htein men were seen leading Ayesha away from the village. At this point, the villagers raised a cry that the security forces were attempting to take their victim away for rape and had no intention of taking the matter to the headman.
Faced with protests by a large number of villagers, the Hlun Htein freed Ayesha but threatened the Rohingyas with dire consequences for obstructing ‘state activities’.
Following the incident, a tense atmosphere is prevailing as villagers fear retaliation by security forces.
