On Tuesday, at around 5:00 pm, the village administrator of Let Way Dauk, Buthidaung called a meeting of Rohingya villagers and commanded them to appoint a watchman from each family per night. Failure to commit such an act would incur a fine of 5000 kyats per night.
The practice of appointing a night watchman has long been in place making it difficult for Rohingyas to go to work in the day as they stand guard during night without any pay on the orders of the authorities.
Earlier officials in Let Way Dauk and other Buthidaung villages had issued a directive commanding the villagers to take preparations to abandon their territory and reside alongside nearby canals where they shall be housed in IDP camps.
Locals say the directives are aimed at making Rohingya Muslims prisoners and slaves of the Burmese government.
