Dozens of families remain stranded at Nakong island in Maungdaw as they wait to cross the sea to Shah Porir deep in Bangladesh. The stranded people, which include many children are counting their days with little food and shelter.
Sources say the families that arrived at Nakong deep are mainly from Buthidaung.
Nakong Deep is an island char unfit for human habitation making it very difficult to get food and water.
These people were forced to make this long and difficult journey after ARSA spread rumors they were preparing to launch an attack in Arakan. Last year’s ARSA attacks were used by the Myanmar military to justify the killings of innocent civilians including women and children, with many babies being snatched from their mother’s wombs and thrown into the fire. The escaping Rohingyas fear another ARSA attack will be used by the Tatmadaw to justify similar killings.
