The Faculty of Law and International Relations at Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) continues its long-standing tradition of humanitarian efforts during Ramadan by extending compassion to those in need. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the faculty has been involved in several initiatives since 2018 to support marginalized communities. The latest program, “Iftar with Refugee Children,” is an excellent example of UniSZA’s dedication to promoting empathy and solidarity. This initiative is being organized in partnership with the Madrasah Hidayah Usmaniyah in Kuala Berang, Terengganu, and its primary goal is to provide essential assistance to Rohingya refugees, particularly children, during the holy month of Ramadan.
The program, which has been a success so far, has been led by committed faculty members and organized by Dr. Md. Mahbubul Haque with the help of 63 devoted UniSZA students. Two visits have already taken place during Ramadan, with one more scheduled for the month of Syawal. The program has received support from students, staff, and the wider community. Through fundraising efforts, the program has managed to collect enough funds to provide iftar feasts and essential items to the madrasa students.
The importance of this initiative is highlighted by the dire financial situation faced by Madrasah Hidayah Usmaniyah. Mr. Mohd Osman Ibrahim Hafiz Ahmad, a Rohingya refugee and the founder of the Madrasah, has pointed out the difficulties. He has stated that around RM20,000 per month is required to manage and support the students and staff of the institution. Despite the sources being only public donations and Malaysian Government aid, they still need to be increased. Osman’s dedication to education is evident despite these challenges. He believes providing moral and intellectual education to Rohingya children is essential as it is the key to shaping their future. Osman’s unyielding spirit and commitment to overcoming adversity are reflected in his determination to provide knowledge and moral guidance. Moreover, through his efforts, several Madrasah students have had the opportunity to pursue higher education, thanks to collaborations with some local Malaysian universities and the Ministry of Education.
The “Iftar with Refugee Children” initiative offers practical support. It acts as an educational forum for UniSZA students and the general public. Through experiencing the predicament Rohingya refugees face in person, students can develop a more profound comprehension of social inequalities and the significance of empathy and unity.
The program’s growth serves as an inspiring model of how institutions can proactively address societal issues while promoting a culture that prioritizes empathy and compassion. A return visit is scheduled for the month of Syawal to provide Madrasa students with the necessary supplies to enhance their celebration experience, fostering a sense of joy and inclusivity despite their challenges. As Eid approaches, let us remember the importance of supporting those in need in our local communities and across the globe.
In the words of Mr. Osman, “I do it not for money, but to spread knowledge and provide opportunities for Rohingya children.” May this spirit of selflessness and dedication inspire more acts of kindness and generosity, embodying the true essence of Ramadan.
