Maungdaw Township, Myanmar The Myanmar military has intensified its offensive in Rakhine State, leading to significant casualties and displacement among the Rohingya population. On June 19, an airstrike in Maungdaw Township resulted in the deaths of two Rohingya villagers and injured three others, including two minors. The attack targeted Habi Rohingya village, where residents have been under continuous bombardment for two days, according to local sources.
Mohammad Enose (35) and Mohammad Eliyas (28), both from Habi village, are the victims of the airstrike, while Hasina (45) and two children are among the injured. This attack is part of a broader escalation in the region, where the Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar military forces have been engaged in fierce fighting. The conflict has forced many Rohingya villagers to flee their homes, seeking refuge in nearby areas, despite the pervasive threat of violence.
In addition to the airstrikes, ground clashes have also intensified. The Arakan Army has reportedly targeted several Rohingya villages, including Myo Oo (also known as Italia) and Latha. In Myo Oo, heavy artillery fire resulted in multiple casualties, though the exact number remains unclear. People have accused the AA of forcing villagers to evacuate without allowing them to take food, thereby exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The situation has been dire in other parts of Rakhine State, too. Recent reports from Human Rights Watch and The Irrawaddy highlight the increasing use of airstrikes by the Myanmar military, which have destroyed homes, schools, and hospitals and resulted in significant civilian casualties across various townships.
The international community has condemned these actions, with calls for stronger sanctions and humanitarian interventions to alleviate the suffering of Myanmar’s civilian population. Despite these calls, the junta continues its aggressive military campaign, leading to widespread displacement and a deepening humanitarian crisis in the region.
