On Saturday, after a two-day meeting in Indonesia, ASEAN foreign ministers urged the Myanmar military council to implement a five-point peace plan agreed two years ago to create a path to an end to the country’s political crisis.
“We have received the support of all member countries regarding the development of the common agreement (5),” Indonesian Foreign Minister Ratno Masudi told reporters after the meeting.
“The common agreement (5) is very important for the ASEAN group, especially for the rotating chairman, as a guide to solve the Myanmar issue in a unified way,” she said.
In February 2021, after the military coup d’état, the situation in Myanmar, which has been in a state of chaos, dominated the meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers held in the capital city of Jakarta.
Myanmar remains a member of ASEAN, but the military council has been barred from attending summits due to the failure to reach a common agreement aimed at achieving peace between the military and anti-coup groups.
ASEAN did not invite a member of the military council to attend the meeting, but the military council rejected it even though the non-political representative was allowed to attend.
The lack of progress in developing a common agreement by the Burmese Military Council is testing the ASEAN group’s ability to accept the public trust, Indonesian authorities said, so they are working to find a solution to the Myanmar issue.
