Buthidaung- A man was brutally assaulted after failing to pay 20,000 kyats to village authorities in Kyan Taung, Buthidaung.
The authorities of the village had ordered every household in the area to pay 20,000 kyats for no apparent reason. But Nuru (s/o Habib Ullah) from Guna para said he could only afford 5000 kyats.
This angered the village headman who proceeded to call up Nuru on Tuesday and brutally assault him.
Locals say at a time when there are intense restrictions on the movement of Rohingyas and they face problems making a normal livelihood, the ‘tax’ of 20,000 kyats for no apparent reason is a burden many cannot afford. However, those refusing to pay the money face beatings by village authorities.
