Occupants of the Nidin IDP camp,Kyaukataw, living there for past seven years, been relocated to a new camp which has been built lately, according to reports in the Burmese media. All the houses are on the process of being demolished, according to the reports. The following statement was announced by Rehabilitation Minister Dr. Oo Thura Aung.
In 2012, Myanmar government detained approximately 85 families and put them into this IDP camp at Nidin. And for seven years, these people have been living like prisoners without access to jobs and basic healthcare.
The IDP camps in the region has been described as open air prisons where living conditions are the worst in the world. The camps were built following riots in 2012 when Rakhine gangs backed by security forces killed hundreds, while many others were tortured to death in custody. The riots destroyed all Rohingya settlements outside the frontier region.
