On Tuesday, according to the state media, the Military Council have sentenced 112 Rohingya, including a dozen children, between two and five years in prison for attempting to travel to Malaysia “without legal documents.”
According to a report by the Global New Light of Myanmar, the group were arrested last month in the southern Ayeyarwady region.
“It’s total injustice for the innocent Rohingya, who were not committed any crimes. Sentencing two to five years in prison is not deserve for them because they are innocent people,” said Muhammd Karim a Rohingya from the refugee camp.
Thousands of Rohingya risk their lives each year making perilous journeys from camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar to reach Muslim-majority Malaysia and Indonesia.
According to the UN’s refugee agency UNHCR, More than 2000 Rohingya are believed to have attempted the risky journey last year.
