Military officials went to the village tract of Let we dat pha yon chaung in Northern Buthidaung on Friday shortly after the Jumma prayers and threatened to burn down the entire village, home to around five thousand Rohingyas.
When some of the men enquired about why the village tract would be burned, the military claimed that one of their men was missing and the Rohingyas are responsible for his abduction.
The military had used disproportionate violence killing tens of thousands of Rohingyas, including hundreds of children, after villagers claiming allegiance to ARSA attacked police outposts in late August. Hundreds of villages have been burned.
Reliable sources say there has been no rebel activity in the area of Let we dat pha yon chaung, and the military is using the excuse of a missing officer to create terror and the grounds for a possible offensive against unarmed villagers.
