On Saturday early morning, a Tatamdaw detachment entered the village tract of Tat Min Chaung in Buthidaung and abducted eight Rohingyas for slave labour. They were taken to a nearby military camp where this practice of slave labour is common.
Protesting the practice of slave labour, an elderly community member told the Village Chairman, “Due to government policy of depriving the Rohingyas from their livelihood sources, there is only a handful of work left in our village and most families are dependent on a daily income for their survival. On top of that a day of slave labour might mean starvation for an entire family. It is getting worse day by day”.
The Village Administrator replied, “ Your entire village will set on fire if you neglect the matter and fail to provide free labour.”
In recent times, the military has raided a number of Buthidaung villages and abducted Rohingyas for slave labour and forced them to conduct unbearable work for long hours. Any individual refusing to comply risk being tortured and imprisoned.
