In recent days, Maungdaw officials are announcing through miking that Buddhist and Muslim will not be able to communicate with each other due to security reasons. They also warned locals not to leave their places and socialize with each other.
The order basically comes as another warning for Rohingya Muslims not to stray too far from their houses, says our correspondent in Maungdaw. Rohingya Muslims have long suffered from movement restrictions but since last year’s clearance operation, few dare to venture too far out.
At present Muslims are now basically unemployed. However the order has not yet affected Rakhine Buddhist who are moving freely from one place to another.
Rohingya Muslims have long suffered from the government’s apartheid policy, even more so since the riots of 2012 and then the clearance operations of 2017 in the frontier townships.
