On Sunday, Myanmar Security force No. 435 officers shot three Rohingya men while they were crossing Thet Kay Pyin to Darpaing refugee camp of Sittwe, Rakhine state. One of the victims was killed on the spot at a checkpoint at Twin Myaung village, Sittwe and another was severely injured and died later on and the third victim was arrested by officers. The deceased victims, Lular Yar (30) who died after being struck in the chest and his friend, Abu Setee (32) was shot through the head by security officers at the checkpoint.
A source of RFA stated, “I heard the gunfire at about 10:00 p.m. and we heard the news about the man’s death about 15 minutes later. We heard they were returning to their homes (when they were shot). The survivor, Abu Setee, is a ferry operator who used to transport patients to clinics at the Darpaing refugee camp.”
When asked the police officials they simply denied the two men had been shot by police, claiming they had been involved instead in a machete fight. “They always do these kinds of things,” said Col. Min Than, Rakhine’s Minister for Security and Border Affairs.”
Even after the ICJ order, many Rohingyas who are in Rakhine state are often being robbed, harassed or killed for a mere reason or no reason.
