National Unity Government of Myanmar Condemns Military Council’s Exploitation of Citizens as Human Shields

The National Unity Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar strongly condemns the terrorist military council’s recent attempts to exploit the population as human shields in its ongoing struggle for survival. On February 10, 2024, the military council forcibly implemented a mandatory conscription law, coercing young people aged 18 to 35 into serving as human shields. This was followed by the formation of a subordinate terrorist group on August 16, 2024, named the “Central Command for Public Security and Counter-Terrorism,” which aims to forcibly mobilize elderly citizens, aged 35 to 65, for combat.

The military council, facing increasing failures on political, military, foreign, and financial fronts, is desperately trying to use the entire country and its people as hostages and human shields. This attempt to prolong its own survival underscores the council’s disregard for human life and its determination to cling to power at any cost.

The military dictatorship now threatens every individual in Myanmar, regardless of age, ethnicity, or religion. It is evident that no one is exempt from this oppressive regime. The National Unity Government calls on all citizens to decisively resist and oppose the military council’s tyranny by all possible means. The strength and determination of the people’s Spring Revolution must be clearly demonstrated to show that the entire population will never bow down to military dictators.

The National Unity Government urges the international community to recognize that the root cause of all suffering in Myanmar lies with the military dictators and the battalions, units, and soldiers who execute their unjust orders. We call on countries around the world to take effective actions to prevent the military council from using civilians as human shields and to support the People’s Spring Revolution, which aims to end all forms of dictatorship, including military rule, and establish a federal democratic system in Myanmar.
