Renewed panic waves are sweeping through the Rohingya Muslim populace in Maungdaw and Buthidaung after it looks like many Rakhine villagers were being evacuated by sea. Earlier last week, government officials were evacuated by air amid a security crackdown in the region. Now it seems since Friday, many ordinary Rakhine villagers, especially women and children are being evacuated under the auspices of security forces and local administration. This is fuelling suspicions the military is preparing for an all-out attack on Muslim civilians.
A source speaking on condition of anonymity told our correspondent that it seems unlikely the Rakhines are being evacuated for fear of reprisals by Muslim rebels. At this moment it seems the rag tag band of rebels have replenished their strength, says our source. Additionally, they have shown little inclination to attack Rakhine civilians, concentrating solely on security forces. The powerful Tatmadaw is entrenched throughout the state. Under such circumstances, Rakhine villagers have little to fear.
On the other hand, Rohingya Muslims are on the run as the army cracks down indiscriminately on civilians, killing dozens, including women and children. Many women have also been raped, while men have been tortured mercilessly. Rohingyas have every reason to feel there is the possibility of a mighty military assault.
Rohingya Muslims are forbidden to move outside their designated zones. Meanwhile Bangladesh has sealed the country’s border, cutting off all escape for the besieged Muslim population.
Helicopters buzzing above Rohingya villages have increased the fears. Thousands of military personal are being brought in to strengthen the already sturdy positions of the state security forces.
