Buthidaung, June 7, 2024: The Arakan Army (AA) has issued a directive requiring Rohingya residents to hand over to the agency all documents related to land ownership or agreement contracts. The United League of Arakan (ULA)/AA legal team states that they will no longer recognize as official any documents bearing the Burmese government’s stamp.
The announcement stated that the AA would no longer permit the use of the Burmese language on letters, contracts, and other official documents, causing widespread fear among the Rohingya community about potential land seizures. Many believe the AA plans to reissue these documents under the Arakan Army’s name, raising concerns about the legitimacy and future security of their land ownership.
Abdullah, a 35-year-old villager from Sein Hnyin Pyar, expressed his reluctance to comply with the AA’s order. “I will not provide our land purchase documents because we are uncertain about receiving our money back from the AA if we do,” he stated.
The situation has exacerbated tensions in the region, with residents worried about the implications for their property and livelihoods. As they grapple with the AA’s demands and their potential impact, the community anticipates further developments.
