Rohingya villagers including children were herded into the village tract of Nol Boinna to speak to the Japanese foreign minister Tara Kono on Saturday.
Village leaders and many people had been taught earlier on the version of events they should relate to the Japanese foreign minister. Mosques and seminaries, which had remained closed since 2017 were opened, and children were forced into these religious institutions where they had to put up a show that they were studying and nothing out of the ordinary was in place.
Forcing Rohingya villagers to relate a twisted version of the truth in front of foreign dignitaries is a very old tactic used by the Myanmar military. While the world has condemned Myanmar for the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims, activists from the community say there has been little substantial pressure from most countries to take actions that will guarantee justice for those killed, tortured and raped.
Meanwhile the government of Japan has announced a grant of $3 million to Myanmar for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh to Myanmar.
