Rohingya residents of Ngan Chaung village in northern Maungdaw are living in constant fear, forced to provide daily food supplies to the Arakan Army (AA), according to local sources.
Despite facing severe economic hardship, the villagers must collectively deliver five sacks of rice per day to the AA. A resident told MDN, “We have no choice but to comply. If we refuse, we fear being forcibly expelled from our village, just like what happened in Gon Nar.”
Beyond the daily rice demands, the villagers were also forced to provide 200 blankets to the AA at the end of February.
With no stable income or employment opportunities, these forced contributions have become an unbearable burden on the Rohingya community in Ngan Chaung.
Forced Expulsions and Confiscation of Property
On February 1, 2025, the AA reportedly expelled all Rohingya residents from Gon Nar village. Following their forced displacement, Rakhine civilians looted their abandoned belongings, including furniture, solar panels, batteries, livestock, and household items.
“We lost everything we had worked for over decades,” said a former Gon Nar resident.
Living in Fear and Oppression
For the Rohingya in northern Maungdaw, daily life is marked by fear and uncertainty. Arbitrary arrests, forced labor, and restricted movement have become a harsh reality.
Many say they are facing ongoing discrimination and exploitation, with little hope for relief.
A resident from Kyauk Yoe Pyin village told MDN, “We are treated differently from other ethnic groups. Our freedom is restricted, and we are forced to work for AA without choice.”
Video Evidence of Looting
A video showing Rakhine civilians looting possessions from expelled Rohingya families in Gon Nar village is now circulating online. The footage provides clear evidence of the widespread looting that followed the forced expulsions.
As the situation worsens, Rohingya villagers in Ngan Chaung fear they may be next to lose their homes, belongings, and last means of survival.
With no protection or recourse, they remain trapped under the oppressive control of the Arakan Army.
