In a chilling incident linked to factional violence, a Rohingya man was abducted and killed by members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. His body was later found dumped in a paddy field. The murder is believed to be part of a power struggle within the refugee camps.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station, Md. Shamim Hossain, reported that the incident took place on Friday night in Block H-14 of Rohingya Camp No. 15. The victim, Md. Khairul Amin, was the son of Jamir Hossain, a resident of the same block.
According to local sources, ARSA militants, led by commander Md. Salim, abducted Khairul Amin at gunpoint from outside his home. They later took him to a nearby area called Mosarkhola Bangali Para, where he was shot multiple times. The assailants then fled, leaving his body in a paddy field.
Residents who discovered the body alerted the police, who arrived at the scene and recovered the bullet-riddled body.
OC Shamim Hossain further noted that Khairul Amin had previously been a member of ARSA but had recently switched allegiance to the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), another faction operating within the camps. The murder is suspected to be the result of a rivalry between the two groups over control in the camps.
The victim’s body has been sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital for an autopsy.
Local authorities are investigating the case and considering the incident a violent outcome of the ongoing conflict over dominance within the refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar.
