Today (1.2.2023) is two year anniversary of the coup in Myanmar. The people of Myanmar mourned the two year anniversary with the silent strike across the whole country.
On 1 February 2021, the Myanmar military coup the power from the elected government and detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Since the coup, the junta has brutally cracked down on any opposition and severely restricted freedoms of speech, association and assembly.
Today the people of Myanmar called for a silent strike across the whole country. At the same time, Rohingya from the Bangladesh Refugee camp participated on the silent strike with the people of Myanmar to show their political vision towards Spring revolution in Myanmar which is started since coup in 2021.
The Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary – General on Myanmar Noeleen Heyzer called for more international action on coup anniversary. The Special Envoy focused on humanitarian aid without discrimination through all available channels, a unified position on the military’s plans for elections, and protection of civilians including both people inside Myanmar and refugees.
We, Rohingya people are part of Myanmar so we have moral responsibility to take part of any action against coup in Myanmar with people of Myanmar so are taking it now from the Refugee camp today, said Mr Abdulah, a Rohingya teacher from the Refugee camp in Bangladesh. The Rohingya people in refugee camps and those remaining in the country, as well as other marginalized communities, are at heightened risk with 2022 marking one of the deadliest years for people forced to undertake perilous sea journeys
Noeleen Heyzer renewed the United Nations ’solidarity with the people of Myanmar and the need for the protection of all communities, which the United Nations Secretary-General reinforced in his recent statement.
