Rohingya men imprisoned on illegal immigration charges in India have appealed to organisations to arrange their freedom as their sentences have finished.
Abdul Rashid (s/o Shuna Miay), Kamal (s/o Harun) and Abdul Amin (s/o Subhan) made these appeals through some local Rohingya men in the Manipur state of the country. The arrested men all hail from Kila Dong in Maungdaw South.
There are six other men languishing in Maipur jail who are also not being freed even though their sentences have run out. They are currently in jail because freedom requires a nominee, which this nine men don’t have.
Five other Rohingyas were freed following intervention by their nominees.
The men were arrested in 2012 after they had fled into India following deadly riots which killed hundreds. Their sentences finished in 2016.
The arrested men have requested their appeals be taken up by Rohingya humanitarian organisations, upon which they would easily be freed.
Many arrested in Indian jail continue to perish on illegal immigration charges, though a simple intervention could have ended in their release.
