In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, a Rohingya woman and her child sustained gunshot wounds after Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel opened fire as they crossed into Bangladesh. The incident, reported around 1:30 a.m., occurred as a group of seven Rohingya individuals attempted to enter Bangladesh through Moulvibazar district.
Nazim Uddin, accompanied by his wife Dilara Begum and their five children, was part of the group crossing the border. According to Nazim, a BSF soldier fired a shot, striking Dilara and their daughter, Sohana. Nazim recounted that the BSF’s weapon jammed after the initial shot, enabling the family to continue their journey into Bangladesh.
Local residents came to the family’s aid, transporting Dilara and Sohana to Moulvibazar Sadar General Hospital. Later that afternoon, they were transferred to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of their injuries.
Nazim mentioned that the family had been in India for two years, facilitated by a broker, though he was uncertain of their exact crossing point into Moulvibazar. However, local sources suggested that they might have entered through Lathitila or Murichhara, which border the Juri and Kulaura upazilas.
The BGB-52 Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Mehdi Hasan, noted that border patrols had been active in the area during the incident, though no reports of gunfire or crossing attempts were received by his unit at the time.
