The refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar will distribute about 2,200 animals as sacrifices for Eid ul-Azha.
The camps in Ukhiya and Teknaf are already receiving animals donated by various groups to aid the Rohingyas residing in Bangladesh.
According to Shamsud Douza, the Additional Commissioner for Refugee Relief and Repatriation, 1,800 cows and 400 goats perished.
He said, “Compared to other years, this year the number of sacrifice animals given to the camps has gone down.” This time, we only had 2,200 animals to sacrifice for the Rohingyas, which is not enough to meet their needs. But we’re collecting and sending our animals to their destinations. Local leaders will assist the camp leaders in distributing the meat once they have killed it.
On Monday, Eid-ul-Azha is celebrated in Bangladesh. Muslims are the majority of the Rohingyas who fled Myanmar and found safety in Bangladesh. They are getting ready to enjoy Eid.
Chief Executive Officer of the Arakan Rohingya Society for Peace and Humanity, Mohammad Jobayer, said, “This is the seventh Eid-ul-Azha that we are celebrating in Bangladesh.” There was a time when we killed two or three big cows as an offering. But since we moved here, we haven’t had that chance.”
“It’s been almost seven years, and we still haven’t found a solution,” he said. The Rohingyas don’t feel pleased about Eid. We are enduring a difficult period due to our imprisonment in an open jail. Still, we hope that next year we might be able to spend Eid in our own country.
According to Bazlul Rahman, the head of the Jadimura Shalban Rohingya Camp in Teknaf, “the authorities have promised to deliver sacrificial animals here by Sunday evening.”
