After a 3 day visit to Bangladesh, Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister Taro Kono went to Myanmar and requested the government to improve the Rohingya repatriation plan.
In the meeting at the Foreign Affairs Minister’s office, they discussed the Rakhine and other matters, including refugee camps in Myanmar. In addition, the Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister also stressed the importance of forming an independent investigation body by Myanmar to carry out its work transparently.
In response to her counterpart, the state counseller said “The migrant-related problems are mainly to be settled between Myanmar and Bangladesh, but I appreciate the goodwill of other nations that want to help us,” she said.” according to Myanmar Times.
One should ask given the attitude of Aung San Suu Kyi toward Rohingyas how can anyone expect the attitude of the Burmese Military to be any better?
Furthermore, if the Myanmar government would deny the Rohingyas their basic fundamental rights and would treat them as foreigners upon their return (if it happens)– then how can the international community ensure safe, dignified, voluntary and sustainable return?
Are we going to see the sequel of 1992 repatriation, but with more horror, agony and loss?
