Kurban Ali (11) son of Abdus Salam a refugee residing in Bangladesh refugee camp. He is the eldest son of the family consisting of 6 members. His father has severe chronic pain and is not able to earn enough for the family.
Kurban Ali said,” I am a student of class three at Sunflower Model Primary school runs by UNHCR, CODEC – EPRC Project. I go to school at 11 am and return home at 4:00 pm. After Fajar prayer to 7:30 am I learn the verses of the Holy Quran at the nearby Maktab. After my school ends, I go to the Icecream shop and collect a box containig icecream. I try to take as much as I can carry and go inside the camp to sell them. I can earn around tk100 to tk150 daily which I give to my parents.”
Abdus Salam, Ali’s father expressed that he can do nothing to earn money due to his severe injury. He said, “I slipped one day while going to the mountain to collect firewood and afterword the injury became a chronic waist pain.”
He further stated,” We get a ration of 13 kg rice, 250gm cooking oil, 675gm pulses, 250gm salt, 1 kg potatoes, 5 pieces of eggs, 500gm sugar, 350gm onion, 40gm garlic, 150gm chilly, and 85gm turmeric, etc. for one person in a month. The quantity supplied is not enough for a person for a who 30 days.”
“We have additional expenditure beside supplied ration, and my family is mostly dependant on my son, Kurban Ali in getting them. I feel sorry that I am not able to do much and I also feel sad to see my son work while he should be playing and dreaming in that age. I hope we can return to our country, ” he added.
