A tense atmosphere is prevailing in a relatively peaceful neighbourhood in Maungdaw town as BGP forces assaulted a day labourer till he was unconscious.
Nurul Islam, from Naya Para (Ward 5) was going to work on Saturday when he was stopped at the BGP checkpoint and brutally assaulted. He was released after he regained consciousness but he does not have access to any medical treatment.
International organisations have pointed out the security forces of Myanmar have used food as a weapon, denying the Rohingyas access to any kind of supplies in a bid to drive them out of the country, an allegation that has long been made by Rohingya activists. The strategy has been implemented especially harshly since November and has driven out tens of thousands of Rohingyas from the Southern Buthidaung area in months.
Now there are fears that this strategy might be implemented in the Maungdaw town area which was spared the violence of 2017, a sizeable Rohingya community is still managing to hold on. However the army strategy in dealing with the Southern Buthidaung villages have raised fears that there are plans to make the entire frontier townships Rohingya free, at a very rapid pace.
