Eleven Rohingya refugees were pushed into Bangladesh by Indian authorities through the Khutamara border of Baldia Union in Bhurungamari upazila early Friday morning, according to local officials.
More Refugees Forced Across the Border
With this latest incident, the total number of people pushed into Bangladesh by India since May 7 has risen to 2,372. Among them, at least 223 are Rohingyas, including 50 individuals registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in India.
Detained by Border Guard Bangladesh
Al Helal Mahmud, officer-in-charge of Bhurungamari Police Station, said the new arrivals were detained by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) around 6 a.m. “Their information is being verified, and legal procedures are underway,” he said.
According to BGB sources, the group was pushed into Bangladesh through the 1011 pillar point of the Khutamara border. They were later found roaming near the Sonahat Amtali area along the Sonahat Land Port–Kachakata road. A patrol team from the Sonahat BGB camp detained them shortly after.
Officials Confirm They Are Rohingya
Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Ul Haque, commander of the Kurigram-22 BGB Battalion, said that during interrogation, the detainees confirmed they were Rohingya, displaced citizens from Myanmar. They have been handed over to Bhurungamari Police Station for further legal processing.
