Cox’s Bazar, October 22, 2025 — The Republic of Korea has donated $5 million to support Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, with a special focus on disability inclusion, protection, and the continuation of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply for clean cooking in the camps.
According to a statement from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the contribution will be managed by UNHCR to improve living conditions for Rohingya refugees, particularly persons with disabilities.
“This generous contribution from the Republic of Korea comes at a crucial time when the needs and vulnerabilities of Rohingya refugees continue to rise, especially for those with disabilities,” said Ivo Freijsen, UNHCR’s representative in Bangladesh. He added that the support will help uphold refugees’ dignity and well-being amid ongoing funding shortages.
South Korean Ambassador to Bangladesh Park Young Sik reaffirmed his country’s commitment to the humanitarian response, saying, “The total contribution of $10 million, along with a substantial donation of rice, shows Korea’s enduring dedication to the Rohingya cause.”
The new funding will support rehabilitation services, assistive devices, mental health and psychosocial support, and the construction of accessible facilities such as bathing spaces and latrines for people with disabilities.
Over 1.16 million Rohingya refugees remain in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, eight years after fleeing violence in Myanmar. Renewed fighting in Rakhine State since early 2024 has forced an additional 150,000 to flee toward Bangladesh, increasing humanitarian needs in the overcrowded camps.
The continuation of LPG distribution through this contribution will help ensure access to clean cooking fuel—vital for food security, nutrition, and public health among camp residents.
