27 June 2025– Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested 13 individuals for attempting to smuggle a large quantity of goods into Myanmar’s Rakhine State. The seized items include 430 bags of urea fertilizer, 600 bags of potatoes, 40 liters of cooking oil, and two Hamco batteries.
According to officials, the estimated value of the fertilizer alone is approximately BDT 1.6 million.
The arrests were made during a special operation on 25 June near the Kyaukchara area outside Patenga in Sitakunda. BGB personnel conducted surveillance on engine-powered wooden boats that appeared suspicious. Upon inspection, two boats were found carrying the smuggled items and the suspected traffickers.
All arrested individuals, along with the confiscated goods and boats, are being handed over to the Naval Police at Sadar Ghat for further legal proceedings.
In a statement, BGB emphasized its 24-hour surveillance across coastal and riverine borders, aimed at preventing cross-border smuggling and human trafficking. Officials added that such proactive operations have contributed to strengthened border control and will continue to ensure the rule of law in the region.
