On Monday around 4 pm, a boat carrying about 55 Rohingya sunk in the sea due to harsh weather. According to The Irrawaddy news outlet, 17 people drowned as the boat broke up at sea. They were all inhabitants of Anauk Pyin village, Rathedaung township of Rakhine State.
A rescuer from the Shwe Yaung Metta Foundation in the town of Sittwe, Byar La, said, more than 50 people were thought to be on the boat heading for Malaysia when it got into trouble in heavy seas on Sunday night. “We found 17 dead bodies… as of yesterday,” he told AFP. “We found eight men alive. Police have taken them for questioning,” he added. He also made a note that, rescuers are still trying to find those unaccounted for.
Meanwhile, Chairman of Shwe Young Mitta Foundation, U Min Chai Wa said, “I didn’t know how many women and men were there. There are also young people among the victims.” All the bodies have been sent to Sittwe general hospital.
Basara Village Administrator U Ei Lee Yat said, “I don’t know about recovered bodies from other places. I heard that there were many bodies and most of them are women.”
Due to climate change, this year- the monsoon went harsh causing extreme rainfall, heavy flooding and deadly landslides in Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Vietnam.
