Teknaf, Bangladesh – January 22, 2025
The Bangladesh Navy arrested 19 individuals, including 17 Rohingya refugees and 2 Bangladeshi citizens, in Teknaf’s Baharchhara area on Sunday night as they attempted to travel illegally to Malaysia.
According to the Navy, the group, which included a smuggler, tried to flee into nearby hills upon spotting authorities but was apprehended. Among those detained were 17 Rohingya refugees seeking to escape the ongoing violence in Myanmar.
The Rohingya, who have faced relentless persecution, including genocidal campaigns by the Myanmar military and armed groups like the Arakan Army, often risk perilous journeys in search of safety and opportunities. Many rely on smugglers to reach destinations such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Teknaf police for further investigation. The Navy regularly undertakes operations to curb illegal activities like smuggling and human trafficking in the region, highlighting the complexities of Rohingya refugees’ struggles amidst ongoing crises.
