Amid the continuing Rohingya crisis, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained 33 Rohingya individuals in Bandarban on Saturday while they were allegedly attempting to enter Bangladesh illegally.
Acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team raided the Amtali Asrayan Project Office in Sadar Union and apprehended the group, according to Naik Subedar Abdur Razzak of Alikadam 57 BGB. Among the detainees, local sources report that 10 are men, 9 are women, and 14 are children. BGB officials have confirmed that all the detainees are citizens of Myanmar.
This detention comes at a time when thousands of Rohingyas continue to flee Myanmar due to escalating violence and persecution. Ongoing clashes between the Myanmar military and armed groups have forced many Rohingyas to seek refuge in Bangladesh. However, strict border security measures have rendered these journeys even more perilous.
Bangladesh is already hosting nearly a million Rohingya refugees in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, and authorities are closely monitoring illegal border crossings. The fate of the newly detained Rohingyas remains uncertain, as officials have yet to disclose further details regarding their next course of action.
Humanitarian organizations continue to express deep concern over the safety and well-being of displaced Rohingya, who face persistent risks and uncertainty. As the crisis endures, calls for enhanced protection measures and long-term solutions to address the root causes of the Rohingya exodus have grown louder.
