Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, Myanmar On June 21, 2024, a devastating drone attack by the Arakan Army (AA) struck Maung Ni Rohingya village, resulting in the deaths of an entire family. Launched from Pan Taw Pyin village, the drone specifically targeted the home of Mohammad Eleyas’s nephew, killing him, his wife, and their son.
The attack follows a similar incident on June 20, in which the AA’s drone assault killed two children of Nurul Hoque from the same village and injured three others. These drone attacks are part of an ongoing and intense conflict between the AA and Myanmar Military in Maungdaw Township, which has caused significant casualties and displacement among the Rohingya community.
Local reports indicate that the AA is utilizing drones and heavy weaponry from positions in Pan Taw Pyin village to strike Maung Ni Rohingya village, leading to numerous civilian casualties. The continuous bombardment has forced most villagers from Maung Ni to evacuate towards Maungdaw downtown, seeking safety from the escalating violence.
In addition to the tragic loss of life, these attacks have exacerbated the already dire humanitarian situation in the region. Displaced villagers are struggling to find refuge and basic necessities, compounding the challenges they face amidst the conflict. Human rights organizations and local activists have repeatedly called for international intervention to address the violence and protect the vulnerable Rohingya population from further harm.
We urge the international community to respond to this crisis, preventing further loss of life and supporting efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Rakhine State.
