Cox’s Bazar, June 12, 2024 A gunfight at Rohingya Camp-19 in Ukhiya early Wednesday morning claimed the life of Abdul Monaf, a 26-year-old Rohingya man. The incident occurred around 6:00 AM in Block A/4 of the camp, confirmed Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shamim Hossain.
Abdul Monaf, identified as the son of Azim Ullah from Block A/4 of Camp-19, was reportedly an armed terrorist associated with ARSA (Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army) and had multiple criminal cases against him, according to OC Shamim Hossain.
According to camp sources, OC Hossain stated that a gunfight erupted among unidentified ARSA terrorists within the camp. After receiving the news, the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) patrol team responded to the scene. As the police arrived, the terrorists fired upon them, prompting the police to return fire in self-defense.
Following the exchange, the terrorists retreated, leaving Abdul Monaf critically injured at the scene. He sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and back. The APBn members swiftly transported him to the Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead.
The authorities reported that the incident injured three APBn members. The police recovered a pistol and one round of ammunition from the scene.
This incident marks the latest in a series of violent events at the Rohingya camps, with five Rohingya killed and six injured in separate incidents over the past three days.
