Residents in northern parts of Maungdaw Township have reported that Arakan Army (AA) flags have recently been raised on several mosques, madrasas (Islamic religious schools), and private compounds in villages under AA control.
According to local community members, such displays are unprecedented. During previous periods of military rule, religious buildings—especially mosques—remained free of political or military symbols. The sudden appearance of AA flags on these sites has left many residents feeling uneasy.
“We have never seen flags like this on our mosques before,” said one resident. “It feels strange and makes us wonder what message they want to send.”
Another community member shared that a religious figure, Mawlawi Mokhsud, reportedly visited the village and helped set up flagpoles near local Islamic buildings.
“People are confused and worried,” the resident said. “No one knows why this is happening or what it might lead to.”
As of now, no official explanation has been provided by the Arakan Army or local administrators regarding the decision to raise flags on religious property. Residents say they are closely observing the situation and hope that it will not impact the freedom or sanctity of religious spaces.
Local community leaders have expressed a desire for clarity and reassurance, especially as religious sites have historically remained neutral during times of political or military tension.
