An ancient mosque in Oo Daung is facing attacks from Buddhist extremists in Southern Maungdaw.
The mosque that has stood for centuries in the West Side of Oo Daung was first targeted during the 2012 riots when it was set on fire by a Rakhine mob. A determined resistance from the Rohingya community however drove them back, resulting in a retaliatory attack by security forces which resulted in the deaths of scores of men from the Muslim community.
In 2017, vigilantes accompanying the military during the crackdown once again set fire on the mosque. The military mowed down fleeing villagers with machine guns while the mosque was set on fire, however the structure still survived.
However since last week, Buddhist extremists from the 969 gang have been dismantling the mosque piece by piece. Our correspondent in the region says that finally, it seems the old mosque which has hitherto stood the test of time and terror, will vanish from the face of this earth.
