Rakhine miscreants vandalised the ancient mosque at Zay De Pyin in Rathedaung and desecrated the Muslim holy Quran. Afterwards, Rakhine community leaders alleged the Muslims had done this themselves to draw sympathy from the outside world and blame the incident on the Rakhine community.
At around 12.30 am on Tuesday, the gang entered the mosque and they were singing loudly, cursing and shouting. After they left the spot, villagers went to the place and found they had tried to set the building on fire.
The fire had destroyed Muslim holy books, the prayer place for the Imam and some personal buildings. Empty bottles were also discovered at the site.
Later when Muslims complained to the village administrator, he said no Rakhines were involved and Muslims had set fire on their own buildings.
The mosque was first built in 1896 and later upgraded in 1912.
